Newlyn’s major growth is it’s fishing industry, the harbour was first recorded in 1435, it then had additions of the piers and became one of the major fishing ports. Today it is still the second largest fishing port in the UK.
Most people don’t know that in 1755 Newlyn was hit by a tsunami, after an earthquake in Lisbon.
The village with it’s bustling fishing industry, scenery and good light inspired many famous artists to paint. Walter Langley is generally recognised as the pioneer of the Newlyn art colony and Stanhope Forbes, who settled there in 1884. The later Forbes School of Painting, was founded in 1899 by Stanhope and his wife Elizabeth.
Today the Newlyn School of Art is a gallery. The village has many shops, pubs and restaurants and a local Cinema.
The meadery is one to visit where you can eat meals in wooden bowls and be served as if in medieval times.
It has easy access to Penzance where you can walk along the greens and promenade. The pretty village of Mousehole is also close by.
