The Romans established a camp further up the road in St Erth. From 1550 Christian missionaries started to make their mark by establishing the local churches such as St Uny at nearby Lelant.
Most of Hayle grew within the estate of Penpol, owned by the Godolphin family from 1890 to 2004. 1756 saw the transformation of copper smelt workings at Lower Ventonleague and in 1779 the Foundry was established by John Harvey.
The ‘Cornubia’ was the first working locomotive to be completed for the railway line in 1845. Probably the largest and least known single industry in Hayle, was the National Explosive Company employing some 1,500 during the 1914 war. Upton Towans is still locally known as “Dynamite”.
Hayle flourished during the 19th century with industrial expansion. By the 20th century tourists started to visit.
With three miles of golden sands and surrounding countryside, the estuary is now County Wildlife Site and and RSPB Reserve.
With Hayle now undergoing development it is an up and coming gem. With its plentiful shops, restaurants, schools and beaches it ticks all the boxes.
